Maybe the longest day at any new job is orientation day and even though necessary, the safety training can be excruciatingly boring. Safety is important, necessary, and affective and it helps to prevent accidents in the work place. That’s what the safety training industry is all about. Safety Training can be approached in an up close and personal manner. All that needs to be done is to look at it from a different perspective. They no longer looking at it as just an OHS requirement they can now advance it to the level of personal effectiveness and responsibility. How? It’s easy.

Teach like it’s One-on-One

For the most part, everyone learns in the same way. However; each person that is sitting in the student seat has a particular way of tuning in to the orator and it is specific to him or her that no one else has. To complete an affective induction, it is important to connect with each student in order to bring to the surface the inquisitive attitude that makes each learning experience a successful one. For example, most people like to hear their name when in conversation. Being in a class room environment is no different in this respect. When a name is used instead of “you” or “sir” or “miss” watch the attention span increase as well as the response and interaction between everyone.

Keep it interesting and concise

Content is important; in quality and quantity. It isn’t always easy to cover all the pertinent information and keeping it interesting enough to hold your students attention. Visual aids with interesting and relevant images will keep the training interesting and can drive home a point of importance better than a long verbal dissertation. For instance: explain the detrimental affects when the backflow prevention system is not inspected and then show a film on the resulting water pollution due to a failed backflow valve. Not only will you raise the comprehension level but you will spark the interest of your audience.

Safety is important and it doesn’t have to be boring. When we think of safety we think about getting people back to their homes safe and sound after a long day in the work force, accident and injury free and wiser for it.
